Comparison between Singapore and Malaysia

SORRY FOR THE ABSENCE.

THE AUTHOR OF UGLY MALAYSIANA IS BUSY.

HE ALSO RECEIVED THE BELOW INSIGHT FROM
A SINGAPOREAN. LOOKS LIKE IT'S NOT SO BAD HERE AFTER ALL,
TO SOME PEOPLE.

UGLY SINGAPURA BENEATH THE POSH GLEAMS OF MODERNITY.

* * *

singapore is consistently running to the front of the line to build these, then demolish it, then rebuilding it. you could hardly find any space without dust n noise from it. if u are not around to witness it say more than 3 months, then yeah u miss out on it quite abit. human wise... cant say much for them. i cant blame anyone or can i if i can locate them whos responsible to cultivate such bad attitude n expectation for life. my experience in KL 4yrs ago was a pleasent one. visited KL 4 times over 2mths back then. KLians very much eqquipped, easy going n friendly to friend n share thus from one party group u may end up to another more interesting n exciting n happening party neaby. here in spore is different too much kiss n tell.... on things not needed to know. n the good stuff are always not told n kept under blanket for themself.

Conversations on Ugly Malaysiana

FRIEND the airport tarmac ground crew in japan are so efficient and polite
they wave at the plane as it moves down the runway and bow when we leave
  so weird!
they remind of those lego figurines with square heads
  very efficient
3:59 PM then when i'm back at lcct, i saw a ground crew spit on the tarmac and some other guy playing with his psp behind some camera
  so tidak ape
4:00 PM UGLY MALAYSIANA: hate all that lor... :(
4:01 PM FRIEND: yeah
and the airasia staff also not polite
4:02 PM the airstewards can be rude
UGLY MALAYSIANA: like 'tak syok wanna serve u' ?
 FRIEND: yeah
  or, ugh hurry up la
4:03 PM on the way to japan, an air-stewardess didn't even bother giving me the disembarkation card just cos she assumed i was japanese
  i even asked for it
and she gave me the 'duty to declare' form in japanese, that's it

Obscenely inelegant pollard

Apa ni?

It seems that a team of not-so-smart horticulturalists/urban de-planners have decided to provide an unfortunately unprofessional pollard* towards this unfortunate Lagerstroemia speciosa specimen, located in the Middle Class compounds of Bandar Utama 4, where the author of UGLY MALAYSIA is currently residing**.
According to landscape architect Ng Sek San:

"Pollarding is a temperate climate practise.....to clear the trees to allow for more winter light to reach the ground.  this is tropical malaysia n we dont need any more sunlight to reach the ground...it is fucking hot enough already....pollarding has got no place here as far as i am concern"

This TRULY UGLY practice happens all the time in Subang Jaya SS13. The angsanas would take half a year for their leaves and branches to grow out and resemble a tree (less like some strange multiple-armed creature holding pom-poms...).

Heartbreaking sight...

 ATTENTION DBKL/MPSJ/MPPJ
PLEASE LEARN SOME GOOD THINGS
FROM SINGAPORE:

----------------------------------------------------------
*POLLARD  Verb: Cut off the top and branches of (a tree) to encourage new growth at the top. /
Noun: A tree whose top and branches have been cut off for this reason.

APARTMENT BLOCKS: A COMPARISON

An unfair comparison between two apartment blocks.
One in Bandar Kinrara, Puchong (taken by my crappy handphone camera)
and the other in Sweden somewhere lah. Snazzy photo.

Which would you prefer to live in?

Rustic chaos + character
VS
Clean modern lines + Sterile Singaporean look
(which can be a character in itself kan?)

MALAYSIA TRULY ASIAN RIP-OFFS

Zeppelin S1 Chandelier by Marcel Wanders (2005), based on the Cocoon series of suspension lamps by the Castiglioni brothers in the 60s... (one brother designed the Arco, an UGLY MALAYSIANA favourite!) These are sculptural lamps with a 'normal chandelier shape' core sprayed with a 'cocoon' of resin... quite a haunting diffuser shape!

It is RM20,000+ if purchased from FLOS (I think, correct me if I'm wrong). For affluent readers who are interested in owning an ori one, you can go to XTRA in GARDENS Mid Valley to inquire — they are the official distributors in Malaysia. If you cannot afford it but macam interested in how it's made, you could look at a posh-looking video documentary thing in the shop itself... You may also touch one, provided your fingers are clean).

However, if you feel Malaysian and you want a TOUCH OF LUXE in your home but don't want to pay for design because design has no value because all your nieces are doing design these days in college since they couldn't go into science-stream, then:

UGLY MALAYSIANA is pleased to announce that the rip-offs have started emerging out of their cocoons of exclusivity~*~*~*~*~*

SPOTTED IN IPOH.
DISCLAIMER: STRETCHY SYNTHETIC FABRIC IS USED
INSTEAD OF WHITE COCOONNY RESIN.

SPOTTED IN PWTC AS PART OF SOME HOME FAIR WITH THE TITLE PERFECT LIVIN'... RM1,680 BUT BIG DISCOUNTS MAKE THIS ITEM AFFORDABLE AT ONLY RM890 SIAPA CEPAT DIA DAPAT YO....

SPOTTED IN A LOCAL RENOVATIONS AND HOME ACCESSORIES GUIDE BOOK
NOTICE IS THE SAME DISTRIBUTOR: "ALFO".

BEHOLD! A screenshot of the ALFO website:

Standard look for corporate websites in Malaysia hor? Got people receiving awards or stuff (in this case, a very 90s-hotel looking table lamp), poor logos, horrible navigational buttons, Datuks in batik...

KEPALA PECAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I seriously wonder what the salesmen from Alfo would say about the rip-off... I can imagine these words used to lure the rich customers:

"Veli special design... veli modern... new look... special construction... see, inside is chandelier, but outside got moden treatment, wrap in cloth, like kuih... if u buy dis, sure many come yr mansion will b amaze... never see dis type of new desin before... young people like dis look now..."

R U FED UP WITH TAK ORI PUNYA DESIGN?

FedEx (US) — Logo designed by Lindon Leader, 1994
(look closely for the hidden arrow pointing to the right)

GDEX (GD Express Carrier Bhd), a Malaysian express delivery company, formed in 1997.

QUESTION: What does GD stand for? (UGLY MALAYSIANA cannot find the concept or reasoning behind the name GDEX under the history section of their official website...)

Why is the logo looking dubiously like the FedEx one in terms of the abbreviated logotype, the duo-colour scheme, and (sort of) how the letters are closely joined together?

The kerning for the GDEX logo, especially between the 'G' and 'D' is quite miscalculated lor.... looks like they just assembled some generic font, and mashed it together, superscripted the "EX" and chose a FedEx-ish colour scheme to boot...

****MORE COMPARISONS****

FedEx freight vehicles... expensive looking corporate identity...

The Malaysian GDEX team...
(which is of course very endearing)
But that little symbol on their bikes... look like tribal tattoo instead of the GDEX logo wor.....
Well they have the logo on their teal polo necks I'm sure...

****BONUS****

FedEx advertisement — again minimal, focused, quite posh.
Even that toy they chose looks nice ah... No complicated Photoshop effects, lots of white space...

The Malaysianised GDEX advertisement. Design aesthetic looks familiar tak?
"PUT EVERYTHING INSIDE FILL UP EVERY WHITE SPACE BECAUSE EVERY INCH IS PRECIOUS, WE R KIASU ASIANS, AND THROW A 15% TRANSPARENCY IMAGE BEHIND BECAUSE IT WILL LOOK UNFINISHED IF NOT... WHITE SPACE MEANS LAZY DESIGN, USE SOME TIMES NEW ROMAN AND HAVE LOTS OF ROUNDED CORNERS FOR MODERN LOOK, AND UNALIGNED TEXT, SOME UPPER CASE SOME LOWER CASE OSO CAN, JUST MAKE THE VISUAL VERY AUSPICIOUS AND PRETTY FOR OUR DEAR MALAYSIAN CUSTOMERS WHO APPRECIATE THIS SORT OF ROJAK THING...

SAME SAME LOOK

MAYBANK ETIQA TAKAFUL LOGO 2007.
(from their official site, the logo brief)

AMAZON.COM LOGO, 2000-2002 UNTIL PRESENT

- - -
Why ah Maybank so blatantly almost plagiarized the Amazon.com logo???

Item 1: The font is almost the same (look at the "a")

Item 2: That yellow curve
(Maybank claims it's because it's their corporate colour,
fair enough but why treat it so similarly to the Amazon smile???)

Item 3: Maybank not ashamed meh being so blatant, 'copying' the look of such a famous design identity? Kalau copy macam a Bulgarian fishing trade agency punya logo baru orang tak tau kan??????? Aiyoyoh.

AN INSULT TO GOOD DESIGN

Taman Tun Dr Ismail denizens and the like, have you ever seen the above banner? It's been there for a long time, hasn't it? You see it when you are stuck in a little traffic jam heading towards Bandar Utama, or going to that Eastin area. What do you think it is?

MAID HIRING SERVICE? NO. ~*~*~ DISCOUNT WAREHOUSE SALE WITH PRODUCTS
THAT ARE ONLY INTERESTING TO GOSSIPPY HOUSEWIVES? NO~*~*~ BUT WHY IS THE WOMAN THERE, WE'RE NOT SURE.

My lovely UGLY MALAYSIANA readers, this is an advertisement for "Good Design", a design "evaluation and commendation system" based on the Japanese Good Design Award (グッドデザイン賞) — an association formed in the late 50s (now judged by people as fancy as Naoto Fukasawa). Basically, design submissions that earn place in the awards will gain a badge of honour for being a "Good Design".

The original logo from the Japan association:
Quite cute and minimalist ya?
For some of you, you may have seen the symbol in Muji catalogues or on the Daikin air conditioner brochure.

For the Malaysian version, behold, a butchered version of the Japanese logo, half looking like a 90s Versace motif, half looking like some half-assed Illustrator job from a fresh graduate who does not comprehend graphic design concepts such as balance and proportion:
Just look at the horrible spiral... It is an Illustrator stroke that does not look calculated. And is it supposed to look like a "G"? The Versace-motif at the bottom is supposed to be a "d" izit? Quelle horreur.

PLUS: The typography used reminds me of the Latin characters of a default Chinese font from Microsoft. It's sort of Times New Roman with very strange font   t r a c k i n g.

BEHOLD (#2):
THE MALAYSIAN VERSION PUNYA LOGO
ETCHED FOR ETERNITY ON A TROPHY BEB:

SO UGLY I COULD SCREAM.
IS THIS A JOKE?
HOW CAN ANYONE WHO SUBMITS DESIGNS TO THEM TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY?
COPYCAT + UGLY.
I WOULD HIDE IT
IN THE STORE ROOM
IF I RECEIVED THIS TACKY ITEM.

Now please look at the following website screenshots.
  1.
 2.
 3.
 4.

Guess which webpage is from the Japanese association (there is one). No free gifts for the correct answer. It is too obvious. The marketing for 'Good Design Malaysia' is really an embarrassment. Often we at UGLY MALAYSIANA would celebrate tacky designs for its innocent amateurist approach, but in this case it's unforgivable.

Is it really that hopeless here? Is it really so "more is more" still, as ostentatious as it was in the early-90s when minimalism was only apparent among visual revolutionaries like Rei Kawakubo and Martin Margiela?

Can we not change the perceptions of the rich and powerful so that they can once and for all stop spewing out rubbish visuals, littering our fields of vision with very ill-conceived and ill-considered Photoshop fodder, making KL and PJ even more ROJAK than it is?

Are we to embrace all this instead? Do you even care! Do you want our roads to be lined with perfectly pruned ginkgo trees (ala Tokyo) or raintrees (ala Singapore) instead?

COMMENTS APPRECIATED.

Wonderful! "Time" and the Malaysian "busiNEss TOdAy"

These two covers were spotted a few months back in the most inspiring late-night magazine store in Taman Tun Dr Ismail: Jaseema. Notice the masthead to the Malaysian magazine: it is designed in a way that incorporates both upper and lower case letters in the same word! Ingenious!

Both are also bespectacled subjects. Mr. Steve Jobs is wearing rimless glasses from German-based Lunor. The datuk on the right, not sure lah...
